Abstract
1. I have been associated with Information Security for the last 30 years. I started as a mathematician working on the design and assessment of cryptographic algorithms for the UK Government at a time when cryptography was a Government monopoly. Since then I have been involved in the broader managerial and policy work with my GCHQ career culminating as Director of CESG from 1999 to 2002. During that time I have had ample opportunity to observe the evolution of cryptography as an academic discipline and also as a practical science (the two are often very different).
