Abstract

In this paper, we propose the Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID)-controller, which can provide proactive congestion avoidance and control using an adaptive congestion indicator and control function. The goals of PID-controller are to control congestion proactively, to stabilize the queue length around a desired level and to give smooth and low packet loss rates. An extensive simulation study suggests that PID-controller outperforms other active queue management (AQM) algorithms such as Random Early Detection (RED) 1 and Proportional-Integral (PI) controller 2 in terms of the queue length dynamics and the packet loss rates.
