Abstract

The recent advances in remote sensing, positioning systems, and mobile technologies have increased the production, collection, and diffusion of geo-referenced data, thus requiring the rapid development and the wide deployment of multiple geographic information systems(GIS). With the popularity of the World Wide Web and the diversity of GIS on the Internet, geographic information can now be available via personal devices anytime and anywhere. Nowadays, GIS are emerging as a common information infrastructure, which penetrate into more and more aspects of our society, and converge with most areas in the IT scenario, such as office automation, workflow, digital libraries, Web searching, and virtual reality. This has given rise to new challenges in order to accommodate new users requirements for new applications. Conceptual modeling and Semantic Web technologies provide complementary solutions for these issues. They allow eliciting of user requirements and the semantics of the target application domain.
