Abstract
Natural and man-made disasters present the need to efficiently and effectively evacuate the people occupying the affected buildings. In such situations, people are usually under stress and the use of a location-aware mobile application for giving evacuation instructions in simple and effective ways can be useful to improve users’ decision making. This paper proposes a mobile system that gives evacuation instructions by employing an interactive 3D location-aware model of the building. The main focus of the paper is on the solutions and the technologies adopted for determining user’s position into the building and for interactively visualizing a 3D model of the building augmented with visual evacuation instructions on mobile devices.
