Abstract

In modern Chinese, a considerable number of shi still possess the grammatical attributes of a demonstrative pronoun. This usage originates from that ofshi as a predicate in ancient Chinese. As a demonstrative pronoun, shi functions as a very flexible anaphor, whose characteristics may help us to distinguish it as a demonstrative pronoun from shi as a verb.
