A Metonymic Approach to the Cognitive Mechanism of Chinese Lexical Meaning

Abstract

The traditional study takes historical and social factors as the main reasons for the development of lexical meaning, while the cognitive study argues that the development of lexical meaning is motivated, instead of being arbitrary and independent of human beings’ cognition and experience. Metonymy, as one of people’s cognitive ways of thinking, is one of the approaches to and the internal factors for the development of lexical meaning. This paper attempts to explore the cognitive mechanism of Chinese lexical meaning from the perspective of metonymy.
