Abstract
Existing methods of cost accounting make differentiated cost allocation in indirect-productive areas impossible. Volume-oriented schemes for cost calculation the methods are based on rather lead to marked cost distortions since costs do not depend on output but are functionally connected with business processes. Therefore, cost management has to focus on the influence of cost-driving processes and their parameters. However, process structures are complex and not yet documented in indirect-productive areas. Cost management of business processes comprises two modules: (1) modelling of processes and (2) calculation of process costs.

According to Scheer the increasing use of modelling activities and the realization of workflow-management concepts are the possibility to use documented processes for process cost management. By using existing process chain models process cost management can profit from predecessor-systems of the operative level as cost unit accounting per unit in production areas does by using work schedules and bills of materials.
