Summary
Various multiplexing techniques for broadcast packet switching computer networks have been discussed in the recent past. Most of the simpler protocols have a small overhead but are susceptible to repeated collisions. Conflictfree transmission is possible by introducing more sophisticated protocols; usually, in this case the overhead grows linearly with the number of system users.
There is at least one protocol which limits the total number of collisions of any particular packet (SLOTTED ETHERNET, see [Sp79]); in this system the overhead depends on the actual load of the system.
The present paper defines a new class of protocols (C3SMA-systems) which can be used for various transmission techniques. Both conflicting and conflictfree protocols are members of this class. Different C3SMA systems are combined by introducing user classes with different priorities and protocols. It will be shown that the overhead of C SMA systems is a small constant which does not depend on the actual load and the total number of users.
The performance of C3SMA systems is analyzed by mathematical methods; the results of the analysis are compared with the corresponding results which are obtained for two protocols which have been introduced by Scholl ([Sc76]) in his Ph. D. Thesis.
