Abstract
Of late years protection has been seen as a very important issue in computer system design, and one of the strands of research and development in protection has been the exploitation of the ideas of capabilities. In the present talk I shall try to gather together some of the motivations for work on protection, which motivations are various and not always compatible, as a preliminary to seeing to which of the various problems the ideas of capabilities are of practical importance.
