Abstract

On most MVS installations the MVS System Trace facility stores continuously useful information about system, application and I/O activities in the MVS Trace Table. A software monitor TRACE has been developed to sample the Trace Table and to copy parts of the MVS control block structure, without influencing the system performance. The information collected is stored in data sets, and can be converted into human friendly data by postprocessing. This paper deals with the method of operation and the internals of the software monitor.
