Abstract
A formal language approach to modelling systems is developed. The presented systems specification language (SSL) is oriented towards specifying system structure and behaviour but it also provides convenient interfaces for incorporating functional specifications of components. A denotational semantics of SSL is given, taking into account the synchronization of activities. Some engineering aspects of SSL are investigated by sketching a man-computer system in SSL. Implementation issues are also given some consideration.
