Abstract
In this paper examples for expert systems in statistics are discussed and criticized from the viewpoint of statistics. It is intended to show that there does not exist one single type of a statistical expert system and that, on the contrary, there are various fields of application for expert systems in statistics. Finally it is pointed out which of these application fields seem to be promising and which requirements for the architecture of statistical expert systems have to be considered in order to obtain systems that could improve the quality of statistical data analysis.
