Für ein verteiltes Mailbox-bzw. Message Handling System (MHS) gibt es seit 1984 von CCITT die Empfehlungen X.400 ff. Damit liegt ein Standard vor, der es ermöglicht, ein im Kommunikationsverhalten herstellerunabhängiges Message Handling System aufzubauen.
