Abstract
In this paper, we discuss two aspects of Bulletin-Board Systems (BBS).
First, we show essential functions of BBS as they are presented to the enduser. The services and structure of the typical Compuserve-Forum (USA) is given as example.
Second, we discuss design questions especially from the BBS-supervisor’s point of view. A cooperative-processing architecture seems to be very efficient, both, in terms of hardware-and software-modularity as well as BBS-management efficiency. In this concept, the timesharing-modules of the BBS for handling the enduser-services are implemented on hosts accessible via local or public network-gates. Complementary, the software- and tool-environment for the BBS-supervisor is implemented on a powerful industry-standard PC-workstation cooperating with the hosts via network.
A BBS-prototyp featuring this architecture is installed and in public use at the St. Gall Graduate School of Business. Cooperating hosts are VAXIVMS-computers, the backbone-systems for the campus-network with access via public packet-switching networks, and an integrated workstation for the BBS-supervisor. On the workstation, the versatile PC-tool Symphony is used as software-development environment for the template which enables the BBS-supervisor’s complex tasks.
