Abstract
BirliX is an operating system kernel being under developement at GMD. It is designed to support recoverable applications in multiprocessor and distributed environments. It provides an object oriented kernel interface to access and use operating system resources. Objects are denominated using pathnames in a single hierarchical name space. One fundamental abstraction, the team, is used to provide objects. The team is based on two abstractions for physical resources, the process and the segment.
First, the functionality of the Unix operating system kernel is supported.
