Abstract

Look ahead methods represent the means for cost efficient use of satellite channels in case of repeated short message transfers. The investigation of such methods has been object of the SENS-project1 and is based on the SENS backchannel architecture as described in [BH 86]. This paper provides results for the optimum size of a cache which is generated on a host computer by its network counterpart in order to reduce the number of subsequent record transfers. The case of concurrent accesses is treated by queueing theoretical methods. Results designate advantages and limits of successful employment of look ahead methods.
