Informationstechnologien, Multimedia oder andere Klassifizierungen an Produkten und Leistungen der Informations- und Telekommunikationstechnik (IT-Technik) sind dabei, die Wirtschaft, die Arbeitswelt und die Gesellschaft in einem bisher nicht bekannten Ausmaße zu verändern. Sie durchdringen alle Lebensbereiche, korrespondieren mit dem wirtschaftlichen Strukturwandel und sind Motor und Ergebnis der Globalisierung der Wirtschaft. „Der umfassende Einsatz der Informationstechnik und die Entwicklung zur Informationsgesellschaft gehen einher mit einem Wandel der Berufe und Beschäftigungsfelder.“ (Info 2000, S. 17)
