Abstract

Salt-controlled basins are common worldwide, and many of them hold major reserves of hydrocarbons (Fox, 1987). One example here is the northwest-german basin as part of the northwest-european basin, which ranges from UK to Poland. A geologic cross-section SW-NE is shown below (N.N., 1986):

Depending on the basin type and the balance between subsidence and sedimentation different types of salt structures may be found. In terms of applied seismics a salt structure as e.g. a salt dome represents a hughe lateral velocity inhomogenuity, causing severe ray-path problems. Nevertheless these problems have to be solved, since hydrocarbon traps very often occur in connection with saltdomes. The key processing step to solve these problems is the process of MIGRATION in various implementations in pre- or poststack form.
