Abstract
The idea of an auxiliary (low cost) LAN for the diagnosis of other local networks is rather obvious. Some preliminary dependability aspects were studied recently. Here an approximate dependability analysis of such a complex diagnostic system is given, which is fault tolerant by its duplex bus and by duplex accesses to the many hosts it serves. System availability and system mean failure frequency are based on easy to handle recursive formulas for consecutive 2-out-of- n:F systems. It is shown that such recursive results are readily found via a fault-tree analysis that is based on the Shannon decomposition of Boolean functions.
