Summary

We describe research toward a general multi-scale edge detection scheme. Since local discontinuity profiles at arbitrary loci in two-dimensional discrete images can be characterized as possessing prior unknown scales along the gradient direction, convolution of the discrete intensity function with kernels of fixed spatial operator support evidently results in only locally suboptimal and thus non-reliable operator responses. Hence we propose a multi-scale scheme following Marr’s and Korn’s approach. We present the theoretical framework for the 1-D case as well as results from an initial experimental implementation for the two-dimensional discrete case of X-ray computed tomograms.

Parts of this research have been carried out while the authors have been with Fachbereich Informatik at the Technische Universität Berlin. S.Back is now with Sun Microsystems GmbH, D-8011 Grasbrunn 1.
