Abstract
In recent years there has been growing interest within industry in the use of Advanced Computer Vision Systems as a means of automating the processes of manufacturing and quality assurance. As part of the ESPRIT initiative Project EP2592 ‘VIDIMUS’ from a consortium led by British Aerospace was accepted for funding by the European Commission in early 1989 to develop a Vision System Development Environment (VSDE). The project will be used to prove the feasibility of designing vision systems for industrial applications such as IC inspection or 3D component assembly. The proposed systems would be more flexible and robust than those currently available which are custom built for each particular manufacturing process or product and whose efficiencies are seriously affected by changes in the environment in which they operate.
