Abstract
In this paper we present an overview of the back-end layer of current hypertext systems, expecially with regard of the use of a relational data base management system. This kind of storage mechanism allows generalized management of links, which solves a series of problems related to the traditional network data model of hypertext systems. We present some examples derived from a prototype in Toolbook under development at our Institute. Finally we discuss the adoption of post-relational models of back-ends, in particular those based on Nested Algebra, where we can manage complex objects and re-define the concept of “type of link” from a structural point of view.
