Belief Revision, Diagnosis and Repair

Abstract

Models play a prominent role in reasoning about physical systems. Two problems in this context are constructing an initial model and revising a model depending on new data. Belief revision is a way to formalize the second process. This paper discusses the principles of belief revision and their application to reasoning in model-based systems for diagnosis and repair.

We define diagnosis and repair in model-based reasoning systems as belief revision operators. Starting from the definition of diagnosis used in current model-based reasoning systems, we first show the properties of such a diagnosis revision operator.

As the concept of diagnosis is not able to formalize important aspects of the complete diagnosis and repair process, we then describe the concept of a repair revision operator and show how to combine these two operators to define a diagnosis and repair process. This process extends diagnosis by taking the repair purpose into account and allows the integration of both knowledge and actions into our mental model of the world.
