Zusammenfassung

In diesem Papier werden die Dienste, die die Gesellschaft für Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung (GMD) im Auftrag des Vereines zur Förderung eines Deutschen Forschungsnetzes (DFN) für DFN-Nutzer, für EARN-Nutzer und für IP-Kunden in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland anbietet, vorgestellt. Die Dienste beinhalten Electronic-Mail, File-Transfer, Remote Logon, Paketvermittlung und Auskunftsdienste. Faktoren wie die Vielzahl der eingesetzten Protokolle, die hohen Leitungsgeschwindigkeiten und die hohen Datenaufkommen stellen besondere Anforderungen an das Netzmanagement und die Dienstgüte. Es wird beschrieben, wie innerhalb der GMD diese komplexen Probleme bearbeitet werden. Darüberhinaus wird versucht, ein Verständnis für diese Probleme und für die Tatsache, daß jeder zum erfolgreichen Austausch von Daten beitragen kann, zu wecken.

Manfred Bogen ist seit 1983 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter der GMD. Er studierte Informatik und Physik an der Universität Bonn. Seit 1987 arbeitet er im Institut für Informationstechnische Infrastrukturen mit den Schwerpunkten Gruppenkommunikation, OSI-Dienste und Netzkoordination. Herr Bogen ist Projektleiter des GeNeRIC-Projektes.
