Abstract
Office automation in open systems is based on international standards like ODA and DFR. These standards provide heterogeneous applications with a common understanding of the format and content as well as a definition of operations on documents, e.g. remote access to a document store. Current standardization covers only the processing of complete documents. However, in many office scenarios the need arises to distribute documents over a network and to access and process parts of these documents. Prototyping work in the framework of European projects results in necessary extensions to the current standards.
