Abstract
The focus of an utterance is often treated as the information kernel of a sentence which can be emphasized by word order or intonation (cf Lewandowski 1990). To have a clear definition of phonetic focusing and its related pragmatic interpretation we use the term “focus intonation”. Starting from a phonetic model of focus recognition in continuous speech a dialog model for the interpretation of focus intonation is presented. Based on an operational semantic, dialog rules are defined which determine action and reaction of the dialog partners with regard to focus intonation. The research presented in this paper is part of a project called MAFID (Modellbildung für die Auswertung der Fokusintonation im gesprochenen Dialog) which was sponsored by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The project aimed at the implementation of a focus recognition and a dialog module able to interpret spoken utterances and exploit their intonational focusing as a dialog device.
