Summary
Central to the present discussion in psycholinguistics are the principles of human language processing. The principles proposed by the garden-path theory of human parsing and the licensing structure parser will be discussed and their shortcomings in the light of experimental data will be demonstrated with respect to English and German structurally ambiguous sentences. Meaning-oriented parsing will be developed as an alternative, where parsing decisions are made such that immediate semantic Integration is possible. The SOUL-processor will be shown to explain more of the wellknown human processing preferences on the basis of a small set of heuristic principles than any of the other models discussed.
Zusammenfassung
Prinzipien menschlicher Sprachverarbeitung sind ein zentrales Thema psycholinguistischer Forschung. Es wird gezeigt, daß die im Rahmen des Garden-Path-Modells sowie des Licensing-Structure Parsers vorgestellten Prinzipien den empirisch auffindbaren Gegebenheiten bei der Verarbeitung struktureller Ambiguitäten im Englischen und im Deutschen nicht standhalten. Bedeutungs-orientierte Verarbeitung, die darauf abzielt, eine frühestmögliche semantische Interpretation zu gewährleisten, stellt eine geeignete Alternative dar. Der SOUL-Prozessor ist schließlich in der Lage, auf der Basis weniger heuristischer Prinzipien eine größere Menge der beim Menschen auffindbaren Verarbeitungspräferenzen zu erklären als die anderen hier diskutierten Ansätze.
