Abstract

Distributed real-time command, control, and communications (C 3) systems are being used in many industrial and military applications. Real-time systems differ from conventional systems in that the consistency and correctness of the controlling process depends on the timeliness and predictability of the actions of the controlling system on the controlled process. Real-time C 3 systems usually have not adequately addressed these requirements in a methodical fashion; systems have been handcrafted and fine-tuned until they met testing requirements. In this paper, we review the evolution over the past three decades of the U.S. Navy’s real-time C 3 database systems for its submarines. We note the lessons learned in the development of these systems and describe briefly a coming generation.
