Abstract

The patient database of a large hospital contains a huge amount of data that describe the duration of stays and diagnoses. So it is a promising approach to use the database for the estimation of clinical incidences of certain diseases. It must be observed that the data are left truncated due to the fact that no stays prior to the start of the database are recorded. This can lead to a bias that slowly decays in time. A numerical estimation of the bias and the time period after the start of the database needed for the bias to decay is given.
