Abstract
In 1978, the Federal Republic of Germany was the first country in the world to include medical informatics (MI) in its nation-wide medical curriculum. A survey among medical students at Marburg University today shows that the teaching does not meet their wishes concerning contents, timing within the curriculum, and the amount of practical training. These results as well as proposals from professoral expert groups and experiences with model curricula in the Netherlands and the USA demand changes: Necessary are computer-literacy prior to university, mandatory teaching of data privacy and security, optional practical courses, and an integration of MI teaching into traditional disciplines. If such a reform does not occur, MI will be in danger of being neglected or even abolished by students as well as politicians.
