Abstract

We studied the practical implication of a decision support system for thyroid diagnostics (THYROID) by testing the correctness of reports, the clinicians’ attitude toward them and the general level of knowledge about thyroid diagnostics among users. The THYROID-system was tested on 1664 consecutive patients with suspected thyroid disease. The system found 153 patients from 166 patients with clinical disease (sensitivity 92.2%). The diagnostic accuracy was 98.0% and specificity 88.7%. The clinicians read printed the reports of the THYROID-system in 85.6%, and they considered the reports useful in 55.9% of the cases. The general knowledge level about thyroid diagnostics among users was tested on selected cases; it was insufficient in a fifth of the answers. In conclusion, the THYROID -system is valuable for diagnosis of thyroid disorders and it can be coupled easily with routine work.
