Abstract
After 20 years of research the first natural language Al systems are beginning to enter the commercial market. Although computational models for many of the linguistic, communicative and cognitive abilities underlying intelligent language behavior are still open issues for basic research, an engineering discipline for natural language interfaces is emerging. The paper surveys the state-of-the-art in natural language Al systems with special emphasis on the situation in Germany and discusses future directions for basic and applied research. Hot topics in current natural language processing research are identified and illustrated with examples.
