Abstract
This paper describes an extension to Portable Document Format (PDF) signatures to facilitate the long term validity of electronic documents. It presents the work of ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) published summer 2009, in ETSI TS 102 778, aiming towards an extension to the ISO 32 000-1 PDF standard.
The paper describes the problems with assuring the authenticity of a signed document over long periods (from about 1 year onwards) and outlines how these issues can be resolved using the PDF extensions for Long Term Validation (LTV).
The LTV extension is specified as part of a series of profiles for PDF Advanced Electronic Signatures (PAdES) recently published by ETSI [ETSIPAdES].
