Supporting Explorative Configuration

  • Chapter

Abstract

We present the configuration of telecommunication systems and analyze it as a very underconstrained task that can only be tackled by exploration, and that is better tackled by lazy integration than by eager truth maintenance. We propose an abstract model of support and its implementation in an explorative configuration support system, KIKon*. Its constituents are a knowledge representation language, an intelligent editor for basic operations and assessments, tools for solving larger subtasks, an archive for drafts with means for comparison, distributed agents that automatically elaborate a draft, and a mechanism to control the agent population. We have implemented three integration methods for drafts and propose an abstract scheme to characterize them.
