Abstract

This paper presents a complete characterization of cyclic codes over GF(q) which areq-ary images of linear codes over GF(q 2). New cyclic codes over GF(2r) are constructed as images of other cyclic codes over GF(23r), for some positive integersr. An application to decoding is given.
