Intention maintenance as conflict resolution upon a means-network

Abstract

This paper presents a model for intention maintenance. It assumes that an intention is associated with a means network, and intention maintenance is a conflict resolution upon means networks. The difference between the viewpoints of AI planning and intention maintenance is explained first, then a model of intention, the conditions under which conflicts between the means occur and the algorithms for determining the influence of removing a means away from a means network are presented.

Liu Heyun received his B.Sc. in electronics from Chengdu Radio and Telecommunication Institute in 1983, and his Ph.D. in computer science from Sheffield Hallam University, UK in 1992. The presented work was done when he was doing post-doctor work in the area of distributed AI at Tsinghua University, China. Dr. Liu is currently a senior engineer at the Software Centre of Shanghai Bell Telephone Equipment Manufacturing Co. Ltd. His current interests concern agent-oriented programming, computer inter-networking, and ATM-based Boradband networks.

Wang Kehong is currently an Associate Professor of Dept. of Computer Sci. & Tech., Tsinghua University. His research interests are in the areas of knowledge engineering, and distributed knowledge processing.

Shi Chunyi is currently a Professor of Dept. of Computer Sci. & Tech., Tsinghua University. His research interests are in the areas of artificial intelligence and distributed artificial intelligence.

Wang Dingxing is currently a Professor of Dept. of Computer Sci. & Tech., Tsinghua University. His research interests are in the areas of parallel and distributed computing, advanced computer architecture and implementation techniques for AI languages.
