Abstract

To date, research into reconfigurable mobile communications has predominantly focussed on the software radio concept, and specifically on the hardware technologies required to move physical layer processing into a programmable environment [1, 2, 3]. Although an interesting and necessary challenge, this only represents a fraction of the overall support and technology required to realise the potential of the concept. Other necessary developments include network/terminal cooperation for seamless inter-standard handoff, QoS management for software download and reconfiguration, a secure software download mechanism, terminal software and mobile radio network architecture supporting terminal reconfiguration, management for software downloads, configuration management, capability negotiation, radio resource management and spectrum allocation policies etc… This paper describes results from the EuropeanIst Trust (Transparently Reconfigurable UbiquitouS Terminal) [4] project concerning user and operator requirements, the proposed overall system environment, security issues, concerted radio resource management, and expected time frame for the development of reconfigurable terminals.

Résumé

La recherche dans le domaine des communications mobiles reconfigurables a été jusqu’à récemment essentiellement centrée sur le concept de Software Radio (Radio Logi-cielle) et particulièrement sur les technologies matérielles requises pour déplacer la frontière du traitement au niveau de la couche physique vers le domaine numérique programmable [1, 2, 3]. Ceci constitue un défi important et nécessaire, mais ne représente qu’une partie de l’ensemble de la technologie et du support nécessaires pour réaliser le potentiel de ce concept. Les autres développements nécessaires incluent la coopération réseau/terminal permettant la transition inter-normes sans rupture, le management de la qualité de service pour le téléchargement de logiciel et la reconfiguration, un mécanisme de téléchargement de logiciel sécurisé, le logiciel du terminal et l’architecture du réseau radio mobile supportant la reconfiguration du terminal, la gestion des téléchargements de logiciel, le management de la configuration, la négociation de capacités, la gestion de la ressource radio et les politiques d’allocation spectrale etc. Cet article décrit les résultats du projet EuropéenIst TRUST (Transparently Reconfigurable UbiquitouS Terminal) [4] relatif aux exigences utilisateurs et opérateurs, l’environnement système global proposé, les problèmes de sécurité, le management du spectre concerté et enfin le calendrier pour le développement des terminaux reconfigurables.
