Downlink beamforming for cellular mobile communications (gsm system)

Abstract

This paper is concerned with the possible implementation of antenna array processing at the base station of cellular radiomobile networks, typically theGsm case. It first explains how those antennas would increase the capacity of such a network, processing uplink as well as downlink. Then the attention is focused on downlink processing, that has been lesser studied than uplink processing and is a more difficult case due to frequency duplex division, but remains of high interest because it may turn into a bottleneck if not handled well. A criterion for transmit and some solutions to optimize it are then suggested and compared, before we conclude.
