Abstract
The paper surveys recent work on abstractions for distributed multimedia applications. The essential questions are: How can multimedia applications express their computational requirements with respect to the data and its processing? What is the role of time and quality of service? What tasks should be delegated to a multimedia system's layer being an extension of the operating system and how could data handling multimedia applications work with such a layer? We discuss these issues reviewing several systems and architectures that have been proposed.
