Abstract
Fault-tolerance in real-time systems is defined informally as the ability of the system to deliver correct results in a timely manner even in the presence of faults. Large-scale embedded real-time systems are being built in diverse application ranging from avionics to plant automation and process control. These systems often operate under strict dependability and timing requirements that are imposed by the external environment. This paper looks at the misconception that fault-tolerance and real-time requirements are orthogonal and it argues that the traditional approaches to support fault-tolerance must be reexamined for time-critical applications.
