Abstract
Finer resolutions of the weather models would allow more reliable and more precise forecasts, but they would also demand essentially greater computer power, which can be provided only by parallel systems. In a cooperation with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, GMD has parallelized the Integrated Forecasting System (IFS), in a portable way. This meteorological production code, that is used each day for the European weather prediction, can now be run in on ‘real’ parallel systems. High parallel efficencies of 80–90% and more are achieved on relevant systems, e.g., on the CM5 and the SP1.
