Abstract

Rule-based systems have become very popular because of their interesting features like explanation facilities, possibility of capturing imprecise knowledge, a simple implementation style, etc. A major disadvantage, however, is their impotence in handling complex systems.

Frame-based systems are more adequate to deal with complex (multifaceted) systems, where redundancy is to be avoided. A merge between the two alternatives is thus highly recommended. Therefore, a modification and an extension of some basic concepts in the multifaceted system approach as initially described by B.P. Zeigler, will be considered in this paper.
