Abstract

An international standard is being produced to specify the general methodology and framework for protocol conformance testing, particularly for Open Systems Interconnection. This paper presents the main ideas of this emerging standard. The basic concepts of conformance and types of testing are described. These are related together by a description of a typical testing procedure. This leads on to a discussion of the analysis of results. The test suite production process is described, including guidance on how to design and structure test suites to ensure adequate coverage. The process also includes a description of the main test methods and the use of generic tests, which provide a link between corresponding abstract test suites produced for the different test methods.
