Research topics in statistical and scientific database management : The IV SSDBM

Abstract

The papers presented at the IV SSDBM describe the different results reached in the context of Statistical and Scientific Database Management. In addition to the traditional topics (e.g., data model, physical organization and data retrieval, user interface and security) new topics emerged which appear to be growing in importance. Those include temporal data, statistical knowledge based decision support systems, geographical data and object oriented user interface. The interest aroused by and the success of the conference, confirmed by the constant, unfailing presence of all participants, is now an established event, held every two years, thus becoming a fixed reference-point for researchers and users in this field.

The purpose of this paper is to bring up relevant issues arised in the above mentioned conference. I hope that, remembering what Shoshani and Wong wrote in [Shoshani 85], these proceedings will bring to the attention of researchers both the gap that still exists between available commercial data management software and the tools needed to support SSDB applications, and the problems (both theoric and applicative), at present still existing in this area.
