Abstract

This paper has presented plans for software engineering programs in the School of Information Technology and Engineering at George Mason University. Those plans include a Masters program in Software Systems Engineering, cross-listing of core courses in software engineering with Computer Science and Systems Engineering, a post-Masters Certificate program, development of doctoral level courses for the existing Ph.D. program in information technology, and evolution of the Center for Software and Systems Engineering into an industrially supported center for research and technology transfer in software engineering methods, tools, and techniques.

The Masters core courses, the Certificate program, and some of the Ph.D. courses will be introduced during the 1988–89 academic year. Several additional courses in software engineering will be introduced during the next one to three years. Approval of the Masters degree program is anticipated by Fall Semester of 1989. Industrial support for the Center for Software and Systems Engineering is expected to reach steady state within five years.

The overall goal for these plans is to evolve a center of excellence in software engineering within the School of Information Technology and Engineering at George Mason University that can serve the needs of high technology industries, governmental agencies, and educational institutions within the Commonwealth of Virginia and throughout the region.
