Abstract

Main objectives of the MeDoc project are specifying, developing, and evaluating full text based information and publication services for computer science literature. To achieve this goal, the MeDoc system has been developed. It provides a consistent user interface for searching and navigating in distributed and heterogeneous databases.

The architecture of the MeDoc system consists of the following components: MeDoc User Agents provide the user interface to the MeDoc system, MeDoc Provider Agents encapsulate the underlying database systems of the providers, and MeDoc Brokers mediate the information between users and providers. MeDoc Full Text Servers are special providers, which store and manage computer science literature in full text.

Basically, MeDoc User Agents are augmented World Wide Web servers. The user logs in to the system with a common WWW client and sends his requests via the WWW-protocol (HTTP). The MeDoc User Agent accepts user requests, forwards them to Brokers or Provider Agents addressed, and presents the results to the user. This paper describes the development and implementation of the MeDoc User Agent.
