  • Von Neumann's work on cellular automata was published in Theory of Self-Reproducing Automata, edited and completed by Arthur W. Burks, University of Illinois Press, Urbana, Illinois, 1966. This book is now out of print. The German translation, by Franz Kaltenbeck, was published by Roger and Bernhard, Munich, 1975; it includes an excellent survey of developments in cellular automata theory by A. R. Smith. The present writer also summarized von Neumann's design of a self-reproducing cellular automaton in the first paper of Essays on Cellular Automata, edited by Arthur W. Burks, University of Illinois Press, 1970. Other essays in this volume relevant to the present paper are my "Programming and the Theory of Automata" and "Toward a Theory of Automata Based on More Realistic Primitive Elements"; and John H. Holland's "A Universal Computer Capable of Executing an Arbitrary Number of Subprograms Simultaneously" and "Iterative Circuit Computers."
