Fuzzy cognitive maps in GIS data analysis

Abstract

 Fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs) are graphs that provide a powerful and flexible framework for knowledge representation. Unlike traditional representational systems, FCMs are able to represent causal reasoning process with fuzzy degrees consistent with that of the human. Consequently, FCMs can be use to build practical functional systems. We have developed a system based on contextual fuzzy cognitive maps (CFCMs) for geographic information systems (GIS) using both spatial and temporal information to gain quantitative and qualitative descriptions. In addition, fuzzy cognitive maps are able to provide generalized descriptions that reflect relationships between landmarks. The system has been used to generate and predict likely solutions for given situations.
