Summary
Cognitive science in technical areas faces a paradigm shift. This has truly become necessary, since automation is craving for solutions to control complex processes – and the current methods and principles do not yield satisfying results. Due to the fact that such changes result in enormous economic consequences, we cannot just "stubbornly" look for further optimizations, but have to step back and re-evaluate the developments so far in order to find new ways. Previous attempts with artificial intelligence revealed limitations of applying such approaches in this field and therefore the decision to look for support in a science that has a functional model of the human mind has been taken: psychoanalysis. A project that was installed at the Vienna University of Technology lead to the first international forum of this kind, held in summer 2007, where engineers as well as neuro-psychoanalysts participated and discussed future cooperation for implementations. This paper lists principal aspects in this new scientific field; it introduces the underlying principles, points out critical deficiencies of previous attempts and formulates the necessary consequences. A completely new way is introduced, which may have crucial influence on automation as well as on other scientific fields.
