Abstract

Smart Grids and Smart Cities are concepts to place our energy supply on new and sustainable foundations. When taking a closer look at the current situation it turns out that these developments are not only plans on the blackboard but are supported by a large range of research projects and supported by concrete results. A holistic, distributed information system emerges, that spreads over different domains that have been separated in the past, e.g. power grid automation and building automation. Its foundation is the principle of the Cyber Physical System. History, definition and examples are discussed in this paper.
